The Sunflower Story

Posted in Uncategorized on July 22, 2008 by Stella Chan

About Clytie,

‘The heart that has truly loved never forgets,
But as truly loves on to the close,
As the sunflower turns on her god when he sets,
The same look that she turned when he rose’

Clytie by Parodi

1680s

Marble, under life-size
Galleria di Palazzo Reale, Genoa

The Transformation of Clytie

extracted from Book IV of Ovid’s Metamorphoses

Tho’ guilty Clytie thus the sun betray’d,
By too much passion she was guilty made.
Excess of love begot excess of grief,
Grief fondly bad her hence to hope relief.
But angry Phoebus hears, unmov’d, her sighs,
And scornful from her loath’d embraces flies.
All day, all night, in trackless wilds, alone
She pin’d, and taught the list’ning rocks her moan.
On the bare earth she lies, her bosom bare,
Loose her attire, dishevel’d is her hair.
Nine times the morn unbarr’d the gates of light,
As oft were spread th’ alternate shades of night,
So long no sustenance the mourner knew,
Unless she drunk her tears, or suck’d the dew.
She turn’d about, but rose not from the ground,
Turn’d to the Sun, still as he roul’d his round:
On his bright face hung her desiring eyes,
‘Till fix’d to Earth, she strove in vain to rise.
Her looks their paleness in a flow’r retain’d,
But here, and there, some purple streaks they gain’d.
Still the lov’d object the fond leafs pursue,
Still move their root, the moving Sun to view,
And in the Heliotrope the nymph is true.

Phoebus here refers to Helius or Apollo or God of sun as the “shining-one”. In her unrequited obsession of Helius, she remained in one spot and kept her gaze on him alone, until she eventually turn into a plant. Though held fast by her roots , she turns toward Helius , and despite her new form , persists in her love for him. She continue follow the passage of Helius across the sky. But Helius “transformed her ….for her betrayal” It is implying punishment brought on by Clytie herself for her obsessive behavior.

It’s obsession..”how madness change to jealousy” is in the second stanza, about her sister comparing with others. So it’s concluded Clytie is just a little obsessive, and Helius change her into a sunflower for her own good. She is actually a good person.

Thanks Jo for everything, for being my best friend, for the present and for the memorable night. I still feel stupid for giving you a cactus garden but I did put in a shovelful of love. =) There is always Christmas! Besides , I think you really hate my red MDIS bag.

Thanks Claire for everything, for being my best friend, for the present, and for reminding me about my dreams. You are the only one who can really talk sense into me. I just wouldn’t listen to anyone. One of the reasons I won’t give up on my dream would be you.

Thanks Pat for being my close friend. I really like the earrings. I really appreciate you putting up with me everytime I have problem in school. I am always glad you are here.

Thanks Javier, Jia Wern and Shaun. You guys are just like the three musketeers. It’s really cute , I mean when you guys share your ice-cream. The red top is a bit skin-baring and tight. The skirt is a bit too big and loose. Buttt! They fit me just nice. =)

Thanks Jackie for the ultra thin…It’s really useful and yeah, I am so going to remember it.

Thanks Jackson for the few days supply of breakfast. Finally, I have proper breakfast.

Thanks U6B, for the cake and everything. I love my class. =)

Thanks to all the teachers for wishing me happy birthday, although I have the slightest idea how you find out about my birthday. (Haha, kantoi-ed)

Thanks and more thanks.

Key of the sea – Pure

Posted in Uncategorized on July 13, 2008 by Stella Chan

These are some of the favorite track I listened to , in Jennifer Thomas’s album – Key to the Sea.

A beautiful storm

Just like Piano Concerto No.2 by Sergei. It builds up momentum with each low hammering. Smooth but sharp dynamics that overall gives the overwhelming effect.

Suite Dreams

A modulation of Ave Maria by Shubert and Cello Suite No.1 in G Major by Bach. Listening to either one alone is a bit extreme. This is just fine.

Old Movie Romance

Talk about nostalgia. It is like as if you are watching black and white Casablanca.

Pure

According to Jennifer, she was inspired by a story a woman told her. The woman was assigned to sit next to a man who is quite filthy and lowly in a flight. She was disgusted by his appearance and smell, so she humiliated him during the flight– drawing much attention to herself and the man. The man kept his head down underneath his torn hat. When the flight attendants come around to deliver drinks, she saw the man’s face for the first time. Her heart sank as she saw his face so weak and lifeless, his eyes filled with tears. His arms shook as he tried to find strength to take the offered beverage. Remembering her cruel actions, she frantically rallied the people around them to give the man money and food. She stuffed his pockets with all he can carry. She cared for him for the remainder of the flight. When they arrived at their destination, the woman waited for the man to make sure the man got to the place he needed to go. But he never got off the plane. She waited and waited, and asked around and check the baggage claim, checked with the security. The man was not found.

This is a song for the angels in our lives, in people who teach us humility and charity. It is for the pure in the heart.

Suddenly I see- KT Tunstall

I always like a heart-felt pop with bona fide electric blues. I don’t know but I can feel the gripping lyrics especially when she went head to head with herself in the video. It’s suppose to sound dark but it sounded so cheerful! aw…it just makes me go skippity-la-la. And I like the way she dress all the time. She is the very few people I feel that they dress to look like themselves.

Just to tell you, I am that girl who enjoys kitchen table songs , like a conversation between me and another person. I think it’s all about focusing on somethings we deem small and magnifying them to life-changing proportions. All we ever need is to SEE. See behind, beneath and through them, not just AT them. There is a difference there and MOST of us can’t see.

What do you see?

Listen Up Dumbfucks:

Most people kill themselves because of a mental condition. This is true in my case too. The condition I suffer from is that I am not normal, I am not like everyone of you “sane” people.

I am not normal in the sense that I am not like every other one of you brain-dead zombies. I can think. I can reason intelligently. I can observe and learn from life. I can make my own decisions and follow through on them. And I can do these without any aid from celebrities, T.V., radio or MySpace. Unfortunately, every one of you shit-brained lemmings seem to lack these skills and I can’t fucking take it any more.

Since everyone else in this world is a fucking retarded drone who revels in their ignorance and unintelligence, I must put an end to my misery. I truly wish I was normal. I wish I could be a fucking retarded sponge like all of you. I wish I could have the same conversations day in and day out about sports, politics and “how about that weather huh?“. But I can’t.

Sure you’ll see this note and say stella chan’s the crazy one. You have to it’s the only way you can go on thinking you’re sane and your pathetic life is meaningful. Go ahead, call me the weirdo like everyone else surely will. Then, return to your happiness of everyday mindless monotony.

My only wish is that the bullet I put into my brain doesn’t kill me but only leaves me brain dead. For if ignorance is bliss and everyone of you fuck-for-brains is truly happy, then living a life without a brain stem in a coma, devoid of any cognitive ability must surely be utopia.

Leave My Machine Plugged In You Fucking Retards,

Stella

P.S. Just to be sure, could you check my pulse again?

hymn to the sea

Posted in Uncategorized on July 1, 2008 by Stella Chan

humming with resonance throughout the hymn

mmm…mm…..mm….

musically, sympathetically just like

the Celtic woman with her hymn to the sea

Now, from Odyssey…

Sing to the wind, to the ocean, the sea,
Extend your voice to the shells—for they hear
Your cries of pain, your withheld tears,
Your heart that is not made of steel.
You hold them back like a prideful child
That knows no better than sky or sand.
Ghosts haunt your memories, just troubled souls without a name;
Thoughts, remembrances bring easy unrest.
The waves weep in sorrow at the song of your heart
That you never dare sound out loud.

Sing to the wind, to the ocean, the sea,
Your tale of hurt, the tale of grief.
Extend your voice to the rocks—for they hear
The hymn that your spirit plays in blackness so dim.
